For the past 30+ years, I've embraced a personality between a crazed cat constantly chasing ideas and a garage inventor always tinkering with something (and sometimes setting off the smoke alarms).
I get curious, make the smallest versions, try them with real people, and keep going when it's still interesting. Sometimes it's a marketable product and sometimes it's just for the joy of building something I hadn't before.
If I would not be happy standing behind the counter myself, I do not start the shop.
What building actually looks like
☑ Scribble an idea on a napkin.
☑ Build the smallest real version. Does it work for me?
☑ Try it with one real person. Do they get value?
☑ If it's useful, it grows. If it's just fun, that's enough.
☑ Repeat!
Hands on
I've started companies from sratch and joined multiple startups. Both taught me the same lesson: the best work is near the product, the service, and the customer. Sometimes it's hands on keyboard, other times it's working with people through coaching, mentoring and keeping the team clar on what matters.
